The hanging body of a professor from the mathematics department of Chittagong University (CU) was found at his residence in the CU campus area Tuesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Professor Abul Kalam Azad, 63, said police and university sources. His wife Shahanara Begum is also a professor of CU, at the Chemistry department.
“He used to live with his family at his house at Paharika Housing Estate at the CU campus”, CU Proctor Ali Asgar told the Dhaka Tribune.
CU Police Outpost’s In-Charge Inspector Mokaddesh said: “Family members spotted the hanging body through the window and informed police around 4pm, after which police rushed to the spot and recovered it.”
“The body was found hanging from the ceiling in the bedroom of the house, while family members were outside during the incident”, said Inspector Mokaddesh.
Professor Md Aman Ullah, also of the Mathematics department, told the Dhaka Tribune at the scene: “His wife discovered the hanging body first, when she was coming back from her class, and informed university authorities as well as police.”
“The main entrance was locked during the incident”, said Prof Md Aman, adding that Prof Azad had long been suffering from depression as a result of various diseases.
Echoing Prof Md Aman’s comments, Prof Gaanesh Chandra Roy, a colleague of Prof Azad, told the Dhaka Tribune: “It seemed that Prof Azad had been suffering from depression as he used to keep silent most of the time.”
University sources said Professor Azad had served as the department chairman and dean of the Science Faculty.
