The police on Sunday rescued a newborn boy in Bogra, a day after the infant was stolen from Bogra Government Mohammad Ali Hospital.
Police said that a woman named Ratna, wife of Mahfuzar Rahman of Bogra town, stole the child.
Earlier, the wife of one Rubel Uddin of the district's Gabtoli upazila gave birth to the baby boy on March 29 at the hospital's gynaecology and labour ward where Ratna was staying posing as an attendant of a patient.
However, Ratna managed to steal the child from there and fled the scene on Saturday morning, police said.
Before she sold the boy to an infertile couple that is also from the same upazila, Ratna kept the child in the custody of a shopkeeper named Bakul in Sirajganj, added police.
Dhunat police, on information, detained Bakul, leading to a raid at the home of the couple—Phul Mia and Laboni-- on Sunday afternoon which ended up rescuing the child, though the duo escaped the scene.
As of 9pm, police were looking for Ratna, Phul Mia and Laboni.
