Nine missing bodies were recovered on Tuesday evening after a boat capsized in the Sandwip Channel, Chittagong on Sunday night, raising the death toll to 14.
Local administration recovered the nine bodies from different areas of the upazila while eight people, including a Deputy Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board of Sandwip upazila still remain missing from this accident, sources said.
Sandwip Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Zakaria told the Dhaka Tribune: “Five more male bodies were recovered by local administration from different parts of Sandwip, including the Ghuptachrara Ghat and Mogdhora Ghat area untill 4:00pm on Tuesday. The bodies have been identified by relatives and family members of the victims and handed over to them.”
“Four bodies were also found floating in different parts of the upazila. After the recovery, the death toll rose to 14 in boat capsize incident” said Sandwip Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Islam.
UNO Zakaria said: “Movements of water transport on the Sandwip-Chittagong waterway was suspended by the authorities due to inclement weather.”
