Locals to resist Mufti Hannan’s burial in Gopalganj
The inhabitants of Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj have vowed to resist the burial of Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan in his ancestral home. Hannan, born in Hiron village of Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj, was executed last night at Kashimpur prison. Locals alleged his father was against the independence of Bangladesh, and also flew the Pakistani flag after 1971. “Hannan’s father Nur Islam Munshi was against the independence of Bangladesh,” said a sexagenarian of Hiron village, seeking anonymity. A meeting was held recently at the house of Hiron Union Parishad Chairman Munshi Ebadur Rahman where participants said they would resist if Hannan's body was brought to the area for burial. Hiron Union Parishad Chairman Ebadul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: “Mufti Hannan has tarnished the name of Gopalganj. By executing Hannan, the country has been freed from the burden of such notorious militant.” The locals firmly stated that they are against the top HujiB leader’s burial in Kotalipara because he was responsible for the murder of countless people with bombs. “Hannan tried to kill Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, we will not allow him to be buried here,” locals said at the meeting. Kotalipara inhabitants expressed their satisfaction over the execution of Hannan. Hannan’s mother Rabeya Begum said: “My son is only a criminal in the eyes of the government, but he is innocent in my perspective. He never committed any misdeeds in my knowledge, but the whole country is accusing him of so many terrible things.” Villagers said Hannan never returned to the village after 2000. In a recent visit to Hannan’s village home, the entire atmosphere of the house was seen almost quiet. Hannan’s wife, mother and two daughters currently reside in the house. Hannan is the father of two sons and two daughters. His elder son is studying at a madrasa in Jessore while the younger son is in a school in Dhaka. His daughters are enrolled at a women madrasa at Gopalganj. Hannan’s wife Jakia Parvin refused to make any comments about his husband while his mother urged the government and the locals not to harass them on Hannan’s issue. Another villager said: “Hannan was a pious man till his youth, but he changed when he returned after visiting India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.”
