Khagrachhari municipality Ward Councillor Porimol Debnath has sustained slash wounds in an attack by a gang of unknown miscreants.
Porimol, who is also the panel mayor 1, came under attack in Arpona Chowdhury Para area in the district town around 10pm on Wednesday.
He was later admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
When contacted over the phone, Porimol said: “Some 30-40 people attacked me with blunt and sharp weapons when I was talking to one of my associates. They also vandalised my motorbike after I ran away.”
He blames Shamim, a resident of Shalbon area, for the attack. “Shamim could be behind the attack as he was summoned to a local arbitration on Wednesday that was held over a brawl among the locals,” he claimed.
MM Salahuddin, additional superintendent of Khagrachhari police, said that the police had been raiding Shalbon area since Wednesday night to arrest the culprits.
