60-year-old rapes mentally-challenged woman

A mentally-challenged woman has been raped by an elderly man in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur. The 22-year-old speech-impaired victim was admitted to Madaripur Sadar Hospital Sunday afternoon for better treatment. Police have detained a local Union Parishad member for interrogation as he helped the culprit flee. Kalachan Hawlader, 60, of Kornopara area of the upazila, raped the neighbour Saturday afternoon when she was home alone, police say. Her parents were at work during the incident, Officer-in-Charge Emdadul Haq of Dasar police station said. Locals came to her rescue hearing her scream. Later UP Member Salam Hawlader tried to settle the matter, but in vain. As the victim's physical condition started to deteriorate in the night, she was taken to the hospital around 12:20am. The culprit managed to go into hiding in the meantime.
