Police arrest Kishoreganj UP chairman for embezzlement of relief rice
Police have detained the Union Parisad (UP) chairman of the Dhonpur union in Kishoreganj, Haranath Das, over allegations of selling rice allocated for the relief of flood victims in the Itna Upazila. A case has been lodged against Chairman Haranath over relief embezzlement and he has also been fined Tk50,000 for threatening and beating-up a food warehouse officer. Itna Upazila Executive Officer Md Moshiur Rahman said Chairman Haranath took 5 tonnes of rice allocated for relief from a governmental food warehouse claiming he would distribute the rice among the flood victims on May 1. However, he did not do so and sold the rice in black-market instead, Moshiur said. Moshiur added that, based on allegations made by locals, the United Nations Organisation (UNO) conducted an investigation and called Chairman Haranath at the Upazila Parisad office for an interrogation regarding the matter on Sunday, May 7. After the interrogation the UNO found the chairman guilty. Due to Haranath’s confession, 110 sacks of relief rice were recovered from a house located near Itna upazila bazar. Later, UP Chairman Haranath was confined and handed over to the police on Sunday. Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md Hassanuzzaman filed a case with Itna police station against Haranath accusing him of relief embezzlement on Sunday, Moshiur added. Moshiur also said Haranath told Badruzzaman, the upazila food warehouse in-charge, that if the allocated relief rice sacks were ever found, Badruzzaman must deny that the sacks were allocated as relief rice. As Badruzzaman refused to so, Haranath assaulted him and threatened him. Consequently, Haranth was fined Tk50,000 through a mobile court on Sunday evening, Moshiur said. Kishoreganj Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Tarafdar Akhter Jamil said: “We are working day and night to support the flood victims. “No irregularities will be tolerated regarding the relief allocated for the flood victims. We are monitoring everything. We are not going to forgive anybody who is responsible for such irregularities,” he added. Haranath was placed before the Senior Judicial Magistrate court on Monday and filed a bail petition. Senior Judicial Magistrate ASM Anisul Islam accepted the plea and granted Haranath bail.
