Chittagong Port cuts down giant age-old trees

Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has chopped off four giant age-old trees in the CPA Monoharkhali Officers’ Residential Area at Sadarghat area of Chittagong city. The Dhaka Tribune correspondent visited the scene on Saturday and saw workers appointed by CPA cutting down the trees, which are presumably around 100 years old. Md Nasir, a contractor, told the Dhaka Tribune that the CPA assigned them to cut down the trees. Nasir said the roots of the giant trees were growing underneath the area’s boundary wall making it vulnerable and inducing risk of accidents.One of the age-old giant trees before being chopped off DHAKA TRIBUNE One of the age-old giant trees before being chopped off DHAKA TRIBUNECPA consequently decided to chop down the trees to prevent any kind of mishap, he added. “The CPA have been assigned a Tk3.5 lakh contract to cut down the four trees at the site,” said the contractor. CPA high officials could not be reached for a statement, even after repeated attempts made to contact them.
