Freedom fighter assaulted for land

Update : 05 Jun 2017, 12:35 AM
A freedom fighter in Gazipur was assaulted on Saturday by a gang of criminals over land. According to sources, freedom fighter Nurul Islam, 71, purchased a piece of land from Rafiqul Islam in Madhkhola area of Sreepur upazila in 2011 with legal documents. Nurul Islam had also been living with his family members on the land after he purchased it, said the sources. Imran Sarker, his son, said local criminals Moktar Hossain and Jamal with their cohorts had been trying to grab the land for a long time. On the day, while Nurul was returning home from the nearest bazaar, a gang of criminals led by Moktar beat him brutally, leaving him critically injured. When Nurul’s friends tried to send him to the hospital by arranging a private car, they also vandalised it. Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur police station Asaduzzaman said they had detained Moktar but he was later released as “influential locals assured us they would sort out the conflict.”
