Life goes on in Chittagong
It is raining in Chittagong. The heavy rainfall is persistent, but not as persistent as the citizens of the port city. Seasonal winds have brought down rainclouds, submerging low-lying parts of the city in knee-deep to waist-deep water. The heavy rain has been accompanied by strong gusts since Sunday. According to the Chittagong Patenga Met Office, 145mm rainfall was recorded in the last 24-hour till 3pm Monday. Meteorologists fear that heavy to very heavy rainfall may also trigger landslides in some parts of the city. Many low-lying areas of the city including, Agrabad, No 2 Gate, Prabartak circle, Chawkbazar, Muradpur, Shulakbahar, Bahadderhat, Pahartali, Kalamia Bazar, Kalurghat, Chandgaon and Bakalia are massively inundated. Even in the face of the rain, those who had offices or school or any work in general, did not relent. People took to boats to make their journeys despite the incessant downpour. The areas have become waterlogged due to the poorly managed drainage system. The stagnant water has even entered many residential homes and businesses, leaving people marooned. Unlike other cities in the country, Chittagong is gifted with a natural drainage system, having a long network of canals, to drain out storm water to the rivers and the Bay of Bengal. But a lack of maintenance of the canals have clogged them, causing the unwarranted urban flooding. Businesses were also hit hard as trading activities in Chaktai and Khatunganj wholesale markets were disrupted. Meanwhile, the inclement weather halted unloading bulk cargo from mother vessels at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port. According to the Water Transport Cell which coordinates the schedules of lighter vessels, unloading of bulk cargo from 35 vessels remained suspended. The ships were carrying various kinds of bulk cargo, such as sugar, salt, wheat, fertiliser, pulse, cement clinker and other such products. However, unloading goods from 12 container vessels was going on at Chittagong port jetties, port authorities said in the afternoon.
