
A defamation case filed against Barguna UNO Gazi Tarek Salmon for distributing invitation cards with an allegedly distorted portrait of Bangabandhu has been withdrawn.
Barisal Bar Association President Obaedullah Saju withdrew the Tk5 crore defamation case on Sunday.
Confirming the matter, He told the Dhaka Tribune: “The case was filed because of some misunderstanding. I have withdrawn the case.”

On June 7, Saju filed the case against Salmon with Barisal Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court for using Bangabandhu’s portrait in invitation cards for the last Independence Day’s official event organised by the local administration, when Salmon was the UNO of Barisal’s Agoiljhara upazila.
Salmon was sent to jail regarding the case on July 12 and was released on bail on July 13.

The portrait, drawn by a class V student in Barisal, was selected through an official competition on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birthday and printed on the back of invitation cards.
The mistreatment of the UNO over the matter sparked public outcry throughout Bangladesh.
Awami League has since suspended Saju from his post as Barisal city unit Religious Affairs secretary.
