Though the schools which were temporarily closed due to severe flood crisis in Kurigram have reopened, the school authorities are not reportedly showing sincerity to help the affected students recover their academic losses.
Sources said at least 193 primary schools, and 63 secondary and lower secondary schools in the district were shut in the wake of the flood.
After the schools were reopened a week ago, the district’s primary education office had ordered to conduct classes on Fridays and yearly leave to adjust the losses.
Despite the decision, there are reports that no classes were held in the schools.
Four out of 20 primary schools in the Sadar upazila are yet to resume their activities since the floodwater receded.
The upazila’s Assistant Education Officer Md Yasin Ali, when contacted, said academic activities in the four schools will start today (Monday).
Chilmari Upazila Assistant Education Officer Md Nazrul Islam said they would comply the higher authority’s order to hold make-up classes.
According to him, there are 25 primary schools in the upazila. Of those, nine remained closed until Thursday
Meanwhile, river erosion caused by the flood devoured five primary schools.
The district education office said it would take measures to help the students of the five schools continue their studies in an alternative way.
A upazila education officer, requesting anonymity, said they were finding it tough to ensure that classes on Fridays and yearly leaves were held.
He blamed teachers’ negligence for the situation.
Md Saiful Islam, Kurigram district unit president of Bangladesh Primary School Teachers’ Society, said there was little scope that classes on the weekly holidays and yearly leaves were not held if the headmaster and higher authorities took care of the matter strictly.
