A drug addict from Chandpur's Shahrasti upazila has allegedly sold his four-year-old son to a woman in Noakhali district in exchange for Tk50,000.
Police in a drive on Sunday night rescued the boy, Jaed Hossain, from the residence of Hasina Akhter, who had allegedly bought him from his father Harunur Rashid.
Hasina, a mother of three girls from Noakhali's Sonaimuri upazila, was also arrested during the drive.
The arrestee was an acquaintance of Harun. She claimed she had been longing for a son.
Harun allegedly took Jaed before her on Thursday and proposed to sell him in exchange for Tk100,000.
But the deal was settled at Tk50,000, Hasina said.
Shahrasti police station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the arrested woman was sent to jail on a court order on Monday.
The boy was also returned to his mother Aysha on the same day.
Aysha had earlier lodged a general diary under Shahrasti police station, and said Jaed had been missing since her husband took him to a shop near their house on Thursday morning.
She filed a case later on Sunday, accusing her husband and Hasina. In her complaint, Aysha also alleged that her husband was a drug addict.
