The executed militant leader Mufti Hannan encouraged his two brothers to join the banned militant outfit, Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB).
The information was revealed as Md Mohibullah and Anisul Islam Anis were sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment by a special tribunal on Sunday for plotting to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina 17 years ago in Gopalganj.
On July 20, 2000, HujiB set 76kgs of explosives on Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Ideal Government College ground, where the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to address a rally the next day.
“Mohibullah was a madrasa student in 2000 (who) used to avoid public appearances and work covertly,” said Gopalganj’s Kotalipara police station Sub-Inspector Nur Hossain, the plaintiff of the case.
“Mufti Hannan encouraged Mohibullah to join the militant group. His involvement in the plot to kill the prime minister was revealed in the investigation.”
HujiB top leader Mufti Hannan was executed on April 12 in a case filed over the 2004 grenade attack on the Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet.
Sub-Inspector Nur Hossain further said that Hannan’s other brother, Anis, had a good connection with local Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders. “But he used to work secretly for HujiB,” he said.
The SI went on to say that Mohibullah and Anis worked to execute the plot under the supervision of their brother-in-law Sarwar Hossain, then teacher of Kathigram Government Primary School.
Sarwar was also sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment.
