‘Bangalis left with heavy hearts in August’

Update : 27 Aug 2017, 11:36 PM
Recalling the murder of Bangabandhu and most of his family members, and the murder attempt of Sheikh Hasina, Jessore 3 MP Kazi Nabil Ahmed has said the Bangali nation are gripped by grief in August. “They [Bangali people] are left with heavy hearts in this month when Bangabandhu was murdered along with most of his family members back in 1975,” he said. The lawmaker was addressing a mass rally held in Jessore town’s Chowrasta intersection yesterday, which was organised by the district unit Awami League as part of its month-long programmes in commemoration of Bangabandhu. The rally also remembered the victims of August 21 grenade attack that was aimed to kill Sheikh Hasina. “Bangabandhu hoisted the flag of an independent Bangladesh in the world. He had been killed for talking in favour of the oppressed and to stop economic growth of the newborn and war-torn country,” he said. Referring to a quote of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, the MP compared Bangabandhu with the Himalayas in terms of his high spirits. “People across the world used to know him very well in the ’70s the way the people of the ’90s would know African leader Nelson Mandela,” he added. After the assassination of Bangabandhu, the anti-liberation forces were in power until 1996, and they turned the country into a new Pakistan, Nabil observed, adding that the government under the leadership of Hasina was working to build a Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu. Stating that the government was implementing several development projects, Nabil said the country’s largest IT park named after the prime minister will be inaugurated in Jessore within two months. “Around 10,000 people of the region will be employed once the IT park goes into operation,” he said. Kazi Nabil said the government will start dredging and beautification of the Bhairab River spending Tk600 crore soon.
