
Kurigram district administration, different cultural organisations and educational institutions organised several programmes to observe the death anniversary of Syed Shamsul Haq on Tuesday.
Sammilita Sangskritik Jote brought out a procession in the morning and placed floral wreaths at the graveyard of the writer around 9am.
Later, a discussion was held on Kurigram Govt College premises, where Lawyer Association president Advocate Abraham Lincoln, Professor Mirza Nasiruddin and Shilpakala Academy Secretary Raseduzzaman Babu made speeches, with Principal Sabiha Khatun in the chair.

Born on December 27, 1935, Syed Haq became one of the most profound litterateurs of Bangladesh. His poems are unpretentious and draw in readers easily. He wrote poetry, fiction, plays (mostly in verse), and essays for Bengali literature. His literary works are included in the curriculum of the primary school level, secondary, higher secondary and graduation levels in the country.
The poet was honoured with the Bangla Academy Award, Swadhinata Padak, Ekushey Padak, Adamjee Literary Award, Padabali Kobita Award, Nasiruddin Gold Medal, National Poetry Award and many other honours. He died of lung cancer at the age of 80 in Dhaka on September 27, 2016.
