How Khadiza is linked to Gulshan attack planners
Suspected militant Khadiza, who is inside the Jessore hideout, is reportedly linked to two top leaders of a new faction of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (New JMB). Law enforcers have cordoned off a four-storey building on Ghop Noapara Road in Jessore since Sunday night. Khulna Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) tells the Dhaka Tribune: “We are suspecting that Marjan’s sister who is also Hadisur Rahman Sagor’s wife is inside the Jessore hideout. “We are trying to convince them to surrender.” Both Marjan and Sagor were among the planners of Holey Artisan attack that killed 22 people, including 17 foreigners, in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on July 1, 2016.

Marjan died in a gunfight with law enforcers on January 6 this year while Sagor is still at large. While talking to the media on Monday, Jessore Superintendent of Police (SP) Anisur Rahma said: “We have asked Marjan’s sister Khadiza to surrender. We have asked her to come to the veranda and contact us.” He also said they have made announcement in the mike asking Khadiza to switch on her mobile phone. The four-storey building is owned by one Ismat Ara and her two sisters. Earlier in the day, Ismat’s husband Haider Ali told the Dhaka Tribune that one Moshiur Rahman of Kushtia lives on the western side of the second floor of the building with his wife and their three children in police raids.

Who is Marjan?

After the deaths of New JMB’s military and operations commander Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, leaders Maj (retd) Murad alias Zahid and Faridul Islam alias Akash in police raids, the leadership of the militant group’s went to 22-year-old Marjan. Marjan was a former leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s Chittagong University unit.

He was believed to be the youngest commander of the new faction of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), which is affiliated with the Islamic State group. After completing his Alim degree, Marjan enrolled in the Arabic department at Chittagong University and got involved with Shibir, the radical student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. Police released his photo on August 12 last year, more than a month after the Gulshan attack. Investigators had learnt about Marjan after scrutinising some 30 mobile phones recovered from the restaurant after Operation Thunderbolt ended the militant siege on July 2.

Who is Sagar?

Hadisur Rahman Sagar, who reportedly supplied firearms and grenades that were used for Dhaka cafe attack, is still on the run.
