A housewife in Natore has committed suicide, reportedly after her husband declined to buy her a smartphone.
Shila Begum, 19, of Bagatipara upazila's Madhabbaria village took rat poison on Sunday night, Bagatipara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said. The woman was rushed to Natore Sadar Hospital but died on the way. Police recovered the body on Monday morning and sent it for autopsy to the same hospital.
Police said they are investigating the death and are yet to ascertain what might have led the woman to take her own life.
According to family members, Shila had asked for a smartphone from her husband Sajib recently, over which they had an argument.
Sajib works in Dhaka and has been married to Shila for over a year. He had not allowed Shila to move in with him. He used to visit Shila at her father's house sometimes.
OC Abdullah Al Mamun said an unnatural death case had been filed with the station.
“There are many stories about why she committed suicide, we are investigating to find out the real cause,” he added.
