Gazipur ceramic factory workers protest for pending salaries

Update : 17 Oct 2017, 04:36 PM
Workers of a ceramic factory in Gazipur have launched a protest at their workplace demanding payment of their pending salaries and bonuses. The workers began their agitation around 8am on Tuesday, gathering at Farr Ceramic Factory in Noulapara area under Gazipur Sadar upazila, sources told the Dhaka Tribune. The protesters said along with their salaries of September and October, the factory authorities had yet to pay their festival allowance, worth six months' salaries, and arrear bills from 2015. The factory authorities convinced the workers to continue working the last two months with the promise that all their dues would be paid in full. The factory workers stopped working on Monday and began to demand their dues. On Tuesday, they started their demonstration. The factory authorities, with the assistance of local police, are preventing the workers from going in or coming out of the factory. When contacted, Gazipur Industrial Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Selim Reza said the workers went to their workplace and staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday. "The factory authorities are now holding a meeting to discuss the workers' demands," he added.
