17-year-old female worker dead after stone pit collapses in Sylhet

A female stone quarry worker has died after a stone pit collapsed in Sylhet's Jaflong area. The deceased was identified as Champa Dash, 17, daughter of Ranjit Dash from Kaliajuri upazila of Netrokona district. Police and local sources informed that Champa along with several other workers were lifting stones from an illegally excavated stone pit on the bank of Piyain River at Jum Mandir of Jaflong area on Monday morning. The stone pit suddenly collapsed around 8am, trapping the workers in heaps of mud and stones. Champa died on the spot while four others were rescued with injuries. Goainghat police station Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Hillol Roy confirmed the news. Earlier on November 7, six people, including three children, were found dead after a hilltop collapsed at Lovachora stone quarry in Kanaighat upazila of Sylhet.
