One held over assault on Bidyanando volunteers in Rajshahi
A man has been arrested in a case filed for physically assaulting two members of the Rajshahi chapter of voluntary organisation Bidyanando at Boubazar under Boalia police station in Rajshahi town. Md Bulbul, the prime accused, was arrested from the town’s Hadir Mor area on Tuesday, Senior Assistant commissioner of Rajshahi Mentropolitan Police Iftekhar Alam told  the Dhaka Tribune. According to the case statement, Bulbul, his brother Monowar and eight to 10 unnamed others hurled  abuse at Bidyanando volunteers Md Rana and Md Mosharrof on November 15, during an altercation over rent for the organisation’s office, which is housed in a building owned by Bulbul’s father. Bulbul and his cohorts also vandalised furniture in the office and threatened Rana and Mosharrof with dire consequences if they did not vacate the floor within their stipulated time frame. After the organisation filed a complaint with police regarding the vandalism, Bulbul and his supporters grew more furious and began pressuring Rana and Mosharrof to withdraw the complaint, the statement reads. As the volunteers refused to withdraw the complaint, they brutally assaulted them with iron rods and bamboo sticks on November 17, it adds. Md Rana, who is the Rajshahi branch in-charge of Bidyanando, told the Dhaka Tribune: "The building owner has been demanding that we vacate the building for the past few months. We had let him know that we would leave by December 31, but still they have been threatening us and demanding that we leave earlier." With severe injuries all over their bodies, Rana and Mosharrof were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment. Iftekhar Alam said police were on the move to arrest the remaining accused. Social organisation Bidyanando, which long been working to ensure equal opportunities for underprivileged children while also providing food and educational assistance, is being represented by a lawyer who took the case for free. Meanwhile, netizens are in uproar over the attack, and have demanded punishment for the culprits.
