Prof Dr Asif Nazrul of Dhaka University has been sued for an alleged defamatory Facebook post about Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan.
The minister’s nephew Faruk Khan filed the lawsuit with a Madaripur court for “defaming” Shahjahan in the Facebook post, in which Prof Asif accused Shahjahan of giving preference to people from his district in the recruitment of dock workers for Chittagong Port.
The court summoned the DU professor after taking the case into cognizance.
"Asif in his post said a total of 92 candidates passed a recruitment test for the vacant posts of dock workers, and of them, 90 were from the minister’s district (Madaripur)…” the complainant’s counsel Golam Kibria said.
However, in a Facebook status Asif Nazrul claimed he had not posted the Facebook status for which he was sued.
Faruk, also a member of Madaripur District Council, wrote in the case statement that Asif had defamed his uncle with the remark.
Earlier, Faruk appealed to another Madaripur court to accept a case against Asif Nazrul under Section 57 of the Information and Commutation Technology Act, but the court rejected the plea.
Meanwhile, minister Shahjahan Khan recently told the parliament that number of people recruited was 85, not 92.
Of the 82 recruits, 23 are from Chittagong, four from Cox’s Bazar, two from Chittagong Hill Tracts districts, and the others from Noakhali, Chandpur, Comilla, Gopalganj and Lakshmipur, he said, claiming that all relevant rules were properly followed in the recruitment process.
