A group of Jubo League activists have allegedly tortured Gournadi upazila unit BNP Joint-Convenor Abu Bakkar, and tried to gouge out his eyes at Pingalkathi Bazar of the upazila in Barisal.
The injured BNP leader is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka's Baridhara.
According to witnesses, Abu Bakkar and upazila unit Jubo Dal leader Fuad Hossain Anne went to a drug store at Pingalkathi Bazar to buy some medicine at around 7pm on Thursday.
When at the store, a group of seven to 10 Jubo League activists, led by upazila unit Jubo League Convening Committee Member Asad Akan, launched an attack on the BNP leader.
The attackers reportedly beat him mercilessly and tried to gouge out his eyes, facing no protest from the shopkeepers and bystanders.
After the attackers left the scene, locals rushed the seriously injured victim to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.
He was later shifted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, before being shifted once more to the private hospital in Baridhara when his condition deteriorated further.
Gournadi Upazila Health Complex's Dr Md Moniruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune that Abu Bakkar sustained several injuries, with his right eye having been severely damaged.
“Whether the vision in the eye is alright or not cannot be ascertained before examination,” the doctor added.
Gournadi police station Officer-in-Charge Monirul Islam said they had not received a written complaint over the incident as yet.
