PM hands over compensations to families of Chittagong stampede victims

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday gave Tk5 lakh each to the families of ten people who were killed in a stampede during the memorial service of an Awami League leader in Chittagong. On December 18, 10 people were killed and 14 were injured in the stampede that broke out as food was being distributed at one of the 14 venues of the memorial service for late Awami League leader and former Chittagong mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury. Hasina handed over the compensation cheques to the families after visiting Mohiuddin’s Chashma Hill residence. Hasina also assured the victims' families of finding employment for them.

The treasurer of Chittagong city Awami League Abdus Salam confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. The prime minister arrived at Mohiuddin’s home at 4:05pm. She spent around half an hour there and offered her condolences to the bereaved family members of the veteran Awami League leader. Mohiuddin’s wife Hasina Mohiuddin and two sons Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel and Borhanul Hasan Chowdhury Salehin received the prime minister at their house. Mohiuddin passed away on December 14 after a prolonged treatment.
