Death toll in Jaflong stone quarry mudslide rises to 5, Case filed

The death toll in a mudslide at a stone quarry Sylhet's Jaflong area increased to 5 on Wednesday. Sadek Mia, 40, was the latest casualty along with Nur Mia, 50, Johur Ali, 65, Mojahid, 22, Shakirun, 26. who were killed in a mudslide while extracting stones from a quarry in Jaflong on Tuesday. According to police, Sadek died late Tuesday while he was being whisked away to his village in Habiganj's Baniachang. Meanwhile, A case has been filed over the death of five stone quarry workers in a mudslide in Jaflong area of Sylhet’s Goainghat upazila. Jakiron Begum, daughter of victim Jahur Ali, filed the case with Goainghat police station against 22 people, including 15 named ones on Wednesday.

Hillol Roy, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Goainghat police station, said: “A case was filed over the incident. The main accused of the case is already in prison in a different case. Police are constantly trying to take the other accused in custody.” Besides, leaders of citizens’ organizations expressed their concern over the issue. According to them, the number of illegally established quarries under ecologically registered areas is increasing day by day. According to a press statement, at least 37 quarry workers had been killed between January 23, 2017 and January 2, 2018. The statement also urged the authorities concerned to take necessary actions against it.
