The road blockade in Khagrachhari, enforced by Chittagong Hill Tracts-based political group United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) to protest restriction imposed on their leader Mithun Chakma's funeral, came to an end on Sunday.
The blockade, which was imposed on Saturday, was marked with sporadic incidents of violence.
Meanwhile, a case has finally been filed over Mithun's assassination. Khagrachhari Sadar police station's Sub-Inspector AKM Mizanur Rahman filed the case on Saturday night, naming eight unidentified individuals as accused, confirmed police sources.
Mithun Chakma, an organizer of UPDF, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Khagrachhari Sadar upazila on January 3.
On Sunday morning, an altercation between police and pickets took place in Khagrachhari Fire Service area when the latter set fire on tires.
Pickets reportedly torched two autorickshaws in Dharmapur area as well.
Police managed to thwart a few more vandalism attempts made by pickets in other areas. A picket, identified as Joy Tripura, was detained by police from Gachhban area.
Pickets also threw brick chips and stones using slings at the running car of Border Guard Bangladesh acting commander (southeast region) Col Anisur Rahman in Punorbashon area on Khagrachhari-Chittagong highway around 2pm.
The glass windows on both sides of the car were shattered in the attack.
Khagrachhari Additional Superintendent of Police MM Salahuddin said BGB troops as well as additional police members were deployed in important areas of the district headquarters during the road blockade. Extra security measures were taken to protect Sajek tourist routes.
