Families of migrant workers killed in Saudi Arabia crash shell-shocked

Update : 08 Jan 2018, 12:04 AM
All Happy Akter is concerned about now is her future as she lost her husband in a fatal road accident in Saudi Arabia that killed another six Bangladeshis and injured 15 others. The tragedy happened just a little over two months after she had been married off to 33-year-old Amin Miah. Ever since hearing the news of Amin’s death on Saturday night, the newly-married bride kept on fainting every now and then. Amin was the son of Abdur Rahim Miah hailing from Dubail village under Delduar upazila of Tangail. Visiting his house on Sunday, the Dhaka Tribune correspondent found Amin’s family members and close relatives were wailing after night-long laments. The neighbours of Amin, who was the sole earning member of his family, were seen trying to console the grief-stricken family members. “I am feeling so helpless now. It feels as if I just lost everything,” said Amin’s father, reduced to tears while talking to the correspondent. “I plead to the government to help bring back my son’s body soon. I need nothing else, otherwise I will die,” he added. Amin’s widow Happy said: “We got married on November 1 (2017). He went to Saudi Arabia in search of a better life, but ended up dying such a tragic death.” “What do I do now? I do not even have any idea on how my coming days will pass,” said the grief-stricken woman, with growing uncertainty in her eyes. Amin Miah, of Dubail village in Tangail's Delduar, had gotten married just two months ago Amin Miah is among the seven Bangladeshis killed in the road mishap. The state of Amin’s mother Anguri Begum was no exception as she, too, continued to mourn over the death, saying: “Where have you gone, my son? What will I do now without you?” Anguri also seconded her spouse’s demand of government intervention in bringing back the dead body. Rafiq Khan, a local, said Amin’s family is very poor. “They do not have anything, except for their homestead. Before going abroad, Amin was a sharecropper, who used to grow crops on others’ land,” he added. Amin’s family still has a loan of up to Tk4 lakh to repay. He last took a loan of Tk1 lakh to pay his migration costs to Saudi Arabia, Rafiq added. Meanwhile, similar situation was reported in the village home of another deceased Shafiqul Islam, 35, son of Hamed Ali of Kasturipara of the district’s Kalihati upazila. The accident happened as a pickup collided with a private car on the road between the governorates of Samtah and Al-Hareth, south of Jizan Province, killing seven people on the spot on Saturday morning, the Riyadh Daily reported. According to the report, the injured were rushed to the nearest hospital.
