238-year-old fair featuring glass marble games
A 238-year-old village fair, featuring traditional marble games, ended at Ramanander Aak village in Agoiljhara upazila, Barisal on Monday. It is said that a 17th century saint, Awlia Ma Sonai Chand, introduced the fair. Every year, the three-day fair starts from the last day of Bangla month Poush. Different rituals, sales of traditional food items, crafts and marble-playing have been parts of the fair. Glass marble games have been an integral part of the fair since 1780, according to Digbijoy Bosu, local teacher and president of the village fair management committee. Marble courts are set here and there surrounding about 5 sq-km area known as Sonai Awliar Bari. Eighty-year old Haren Biswas of the village said the marble-games are held almost everywhere – on roads, home yards, crop-fields, gardens. Special Nabanna feast cooked with broken rice, molasses, coconut and banana is given to the visitors during the fair, he added. Cultural functions like Kobigaan, Namsangkirtan, and Boisnav Seba are also held during the fair.
