UN special rapporteur visits Rohingya camps in Teknaf

Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, on Saturday visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Teknaf to speak to the refugees. Lee reached the Rohingya camps of Domdomia in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, at around 9 am on Saturday. Subsequently, she greeted 10 Rohingya men and 10 Rohingya women in the reception center of Teknaf Nature Park, where she listened to their accounts of the violence carried out against them by the Myanmar military. Officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other foreign aid institutions were also present at that time. Earlier, Yanghee Lee reached Dhaka on Wednesday and Cox's Bazar on Friday afternoon. Although she was supposed to visit Myanmar this month, she has come to visit Bangladesh instead due to a ban imposed upon her by the Myanmar government. She is set to leave for Thailand on January 24. Since August last year, thousands of Rohingyas have sought refuge in Bangladesh from a vicious military crackdown in Rakhine State. Most of the entrants arrived through the southeastern part of Bangladesh around Cox’s Bazar.
