Update : 03 Feb 2018, 05:59 PM
Kazi Nabil Ahmed, MP of Jessore-3 constituency, on Saturday inspected the start of the Bhairab River development and clean-up project. “The people have long been demanding the clean-up and development of the Bhairab River, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has now fulfilled our request,” the MP said as work on the project began. “I placed a bill for the project before the National Parliament several times, and it was finally approved a year and a half ago. If the people are behind the government, more rivers in Jessore can be developed in the future,” he added. Kazi Nabil also praised the government institutions that are involved in the work on the river, and hoped the people would extend their cooperation to project officials. Several top Awami League leaders were in attendance at the event. Jessore Water Development Board Deputy Assistant Engineer Tarun Hossain said the entire Bhairab River project would be completed by June 30, 2021. “96 km of excavation work on the Bhairab River will be conducted from Taherpur to Boshundia's Afra to restore its navigability. The government has allocated Tk272.81 crore for the project. In the initial stage, the Water Development Board has started excavating 10km of the river from Konezpur to West Sitarampur at a cost of Tk24.44 crore,” he added. Earlier on January 28, a notice was issued to occupants of the banks of the Bhairab River, asking them to remove their illegal structures within seven days. After the deadline to remove the structures expires, an operation will be launched to evict illegal occupants.
