Students of Rajshahi University (RU) blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway on Thursday from 11am to 2pm protesting the assault of a law professor by a group of intern doctors.
Later, when RU Proctor Prof Lutfar Rahman gave them assurance of action, the students lifted the road blockade and entered the campus.
The students demanded the arrest and expulsion of the interns who assaulted Prof ATM Enamul Zahir by 4pm.
The protesting students said: “Assaulting a teacher is the most heinous thing a student can do, so we demand exemplary punishment for those who attacked our teacher.”
Proctor Prof Lutfar Rahman said: “The students’ demands are logical. We are also shocked. But, we requested them to withdraw their programme from the highway so that others don’t have to suffer from traffic congestion. They have accepted our request.”
Motihar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Hasan said the students carried out their programme peacefully and that their demands were logical.
Police will take action against the accused if a complaint is filed, the OC added.
On Wednesday night, the RU professor was assaulted by a group of intern doctors at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
