Fisheries and Livestock Minister Narayon Chandra Chanda has said Rangamati’s Kaptai Lake, the largest manmade lake in Bangladesh, should be dredged to boost fish stock.
His remarks came at a workshop on “Management Strategy for Developing Fisheries Resources in Kaptai Lake” at Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) in the city on Sunday.
Saying his ministry would play an active role to excavate the lake, Narayon asked the Ministry of Shipping and Ministry of Water Resources for technical assistance in this regard.
He said: “Kaptai Lake’s boundary needs to be demarcated and we will take all necessary steps for its conservation. We should determine the reasons if fish production declines. Research should be conducted as to what types of fish should be farmed in the lake.”
Addressing the workshop, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing said: “We should work in a more concerted way to increase the depth, stop illegal fishing and encroachment in the lake.”
