Defamation suit against Shakib Khan: Court asks for investigation report by March 14
A Habiganj court has asked the Detective Branch (DB) to submit the report of their investigation into the fraud and defamation suit against film actor Shakib Khan, that was filed by an auto-rickshaw driver for giving his mobile phone number away in a film, by March 14. Senior Judicial Magistrate Shampa Jahan gave the order on Monday, after yet another deadline was missed by the investigation officer (IO) and Habiganj DB Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam, said the plaintiff's lawyer MA Mazid. On October 29, 2017, Izazul Miah, an auto-rickshaw driver from Habiganj, filed the case, complaining that his life was turned upside down when the popular film actor carelessly displayed his phone number in the film “Rajneeti.” Izazul also sued the film's director Bulbul Biswas and producer Ashfaque Ahmed.

“Rajneeti,” an Eid-ul-Fitr special feature film, was released in July and stars Shakib Khan as well as Opu Bishwas. In one of the scenes of “Rajneeti,” Shakib’s character lecherously gives his phone number to Opu Bishwas’ character. The number turned out to be real, belonging to Izazul, a native of Jatrapasha village in Habiganj’s Baniachong upazila. However, film star Shakib’s crazed fans believed it was the number of Bangladesh’s “King Khan;” and they called the number to profess their admiration for their favourite actor.

Izazul’s phone started ringing day and night. Police sources said a total of 432 calls were made to his number between July 10 and July 15. Whenever he answered, the callers, most of whom were women, excitedly queried: “Shakib Khan? I’m your biggest fan!” Izazul's wife left him as so many women were calling him, and he started losing clients because they could not reach him on his phone, as it was unavailable due to calls from Shakib Khan's fans. Izazul has claimed that the director and producer of the film did not ask for his permission before using his number in the film. However, director Bulbul Bishwas claimed the number had not been in use for around five years in justification for its use. Izazul’s lawyer MA Mazid said: “As the mobile number was widely circulated, the plaintiff’s phone remained busy for most of the day over the last few months, causing him to lose his business.” The lawyer further said they had requested that the court to stop promotion and screening of the film until the case is dismissed.
