Farmer's son becomes BCS cadre

Update : 17 Mar 2018, 04:13 PM
Ferdous Alam, the son of farmer Md Nur Amin from Ulipur upazila of Kurigram district, has earned recommendation as a first gazette officer in the 36th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exams. Md Nur Amin has spent his whole life selling betel leaves in rail stations, working on fields, selling vegetables that he grew on his own land, and even keeping his lands mortgage to meet ends. However, he never compromised when it came to providing for his sons' education. In a conversation with Md Amin, he said: "I have not entertained any leisurely activities in my life. My only wish was to watch my sons succeed." Having received no education himself, he left no stone unturned to provide for his sons. His older son, Feroz Alam, having completed his postgraduate education, is currently teaching at a local school, while Ferdous received commendation in the education cadre of the 36th BCS examination. “To ensure that Ferdous faced no financial restrictions when he enrolled in University of Dhaka, I sold our cow and kept our land mortgage," said Md Amin. "Every year, I toiled in the fields and sold vegetables in the market, and sometimes, I would buy vegetables from others and sell those in the market too. “But I did not let him do any sort of job. I did not even let him be a private tutor,” he said. The proud parents of Ferdous have nothing but exuberance at Ferdous' admirable performance in the BCS examination. Talking to Ferdous over the phone, it was found that he had completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in 2011 from Ulipur Moharani Shornomoyi School and College and later, enrolled in the department of Philosophy in Dhaka University. “My parents did not let me do any work. Now it's my chance to repay them for all their efforts,” Ferdous said. “I have passed the viva voce of the 37th BCS exam, and successfully passed the preliminary test of the 38th exam. “I am trying to qualify in the administration cadre. So let's see what my luck favours,” he added. The overwhelmed and relieved father, Md Amin, now wishes to pay off his mortgage and begin repairing his house.
