Transport workers blocked the Dhaka–Chapainawabganj bypass on Friday, protesting harassment by a police official and demanding his removal.
Mofakkharul Alam, a traffic inspector of Rajshahi city, said Sergeant Rabiul Islam intercepted a truck in front of the Women's Polytechnic Institute in the city and asked for vehicle documents.
Rabiul and truck driver Abul Kalam Azad got into an altercation as the latter refused to show him the documents.
As the sergeant allegedly dragged him out of the vehicle at one point of the altercation, aggrieved transport workers then beat up the sergeant and kept the road blocked, causing a huge gridlock in the area.
The workers lifted the blockade following an intervention by police and worker representatives.
