Bus owners and workers of Gopalganj on Monday launched an indefinite strike protesting the torching of a bus, and demanded a stop to the plying of illegal vehicles on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
Bus services on inter-district routes were suspended after the strike began at 6am, inconveniencing commuters.
The decision to go on strike came at a meeting of the bus owners' and workers' associations, held at Gopalganj Police Lines bus stand on Sunday evening.
Earlier, two people including a student of Gopalganj Polytechnic Institute were killed when a bus skidded off the road and fell into a ditch at Gopinathpur in Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
Angered at their peer’s death, students of the institute blocked the highway, vandalized several vehicles and torched the bus which was in the accident.
Police filed a case against 700-800 people on Sunday night over the obstruction law enforcers and torching vehicles in the incident, Sadar police station OC Monirul Islam said.
