Teesta river fuller again, flow trebles

Update : 19 Apr 2018, 11:59 AM
The water flow has suddenly jumped at Teesta barrage point in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat. From Tuesday evening, the water level started to rise, recording a rise of nearly 10cm in one day. The water level was 50.05cm Tuesday night and 51.10 on Wednesday. On Monday the level was recorded at 41.15cm. The volume of water flow at the barrage point has increased to 2,300 cusecs. Sources at the Bangladesh Water Development Board said if the increase persists, farmers will gain irrigation for 148263.23 acres of land. Farmers started their crops leaving out the Rangpur and Dinajpur command areas of the barrage for lack of water this year. To accommodate the rising waters, several gates of the barrage have been opened. Now, water is entering the char areas of the Teesta. The sudden rincrease in the river flow has brought smiles to the faces of farmers in the district. At the same time, they are also worried that their pumpkin, onion, and garlic fields might be damaged going under water. Rafiqul Islam, executive engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, said the water flow of the river was 800-900 cusecs even a week ago. On Wednesday, it increased to 2300 cusecs, nearly trebling. Heavy rainfall and opening of the Gozoldoba barrage gate on the Indian side are behind the increased water level, said the official. Farmers will benefit in the boro season from the increased waters , he added.
