Workers’ organizations have demonstrated in Savar Bazar Bus Stand area, demanding capital punishment for Sohel Rana, the owner of the Rana Plaza building that collapsed in 2013, killing more than 1,100 workers.
Worker leaders, activists and family members of the deceased and injured victims gathered in front of the scene of the building collapse to pay their respects on Tuesday, which marks the five-year anniversary of the horrific incident.
The protesters also demanded compensation for the victims of the tragedy.

Present at the demonstration, Garments Sramik Oikya Forum President, Moshrefa Mishu said: “The trial proceeding of Rana Plaza incident is yet to be completed even after five years. Only a few days ago, Rana’s mother was sentenced to only six years of imprisonment.
“There have been attempts to cover up Rana’s crimes, but the people of Bangladesh will never allow it.”
Moshrefa Mishu demanded that Sohel Rana be hanged until his death for his crimes.

Victims’ family members and workers’ leaders and activists paid their respect at a makeshift altar at the Savar Bazar Bus Stand area from 8am Tuesday morning.
Protest demonstrations demanding capital punishment for Rana and rehabilitation initiatives for the surviving Rana Plaza workers were also held on Dhaka-Aricha Highway.
April 24 marks five years since workers were forced to enter the risky eight-story Rana Plaza building in Savar, minutes before it collapsed on top of them, killing at least 1,138 and injuring over 2,000 workers.
