Fratricide, Matricide incidents in Barishal, Joypurhat
A Malaysia-based Bangladeshi allegedly killed his Saudi expatriate younger brother over a paternal property feud in their home village of Bhurghata in the Gournadi upazila of Barishal on Thursday. Monirul Islam, OC of Gournadi police station, said Nazrul Islam, 38, and Badal Akon, 35, were engaged in a family feud following the death of their father, Golam Ali Akon. When Nazrul returned to Bangladesh from Malaysia about a month ago, he took it upon himself to break the cottage of hen and cocks (Murgir Khop) belonging to Badal. When the younger sibling came home from Saudi Arabia on April 18, he asked his brother to repair the damage to the cottage. Nazrul refused, leading to a feud over the partition of paternal properties which boiled over at about 9am on Thursday, when Nazrul and his wife Rehana Begum began beating Badal. When Badal became faint, he was rushed to Gournadi upazila health complex where Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, medical officer on duty, declared him dead. “The cause of death will be ascertained after an autopsy,” Dr Abdullah said. Abdur Rob Haoladar, additional superintendent of police for Gournadi Circle, said Badal’s body had been sent to the Sher-E-Bangla Medical College morgue. According to police, Badal had minor wounds on his hand and was bleeding from his ear. Badal’s wife, Iti Akhter, was preparing to lodge a murder case, police sources said. Nazrul and his wife, Rehana, are reported to have fled the scene. In Joypurhat on Thursday, 23-year-old Palash Hossain hacked his mother to death in Sagrampur village of Khetlal upazila, reportedly after failing to find any Bidi (locally made cigarette) to smoke. The victim was identified as Rezia Begum, the 55-year-old wife of day labourer Badshah Miah. “The incident happened after I went out of the house this morning,” Badshah said. “If I was present in the house at that time, Palash would not have even dared to do such thing.” Palash was immediately caught by local villagers and handed over to police. The eldest of three siblings, his father said Palash has been suffering from mental illness for the past three years and had gone through many treatments but could not be cured. “Palash was fine in his childhood but for the past three years he has become a different person,” Bahshah Miah said. Local people said Palash is known as “Pagol” (mad) in the area, but he had never caused any harm to anyone before. OC Akram Hossain of Khetlal police station said the suspect has been arrested and there will be an autopsy of the dead body. “His family members have said that he is mentally ill,” Akram said. “This matter will be cleared after the necessary investigation is done.”
