Lightning bolts kill 6, injure 2 in different districts

At least six people have been killed and two others injured by lightning strikes in five districts of Bangladesh on Wednesday, as thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds sweep through different parts of the country.  

Eighteen people were reportedly killed by lightning in various districts on Sunday, 16 on Monday, and 11 more on Tuesday.   

Amid growing concerns over the surging death toll, a weather office bulletin on Tuesday said a nor’wester together with heavy rain and lightning would possibly pass through 15 districts in 18 hours commencing on Wednesday afternoon, reports UNB.

In Habiganj, two farmers were killed and two others hurt in lightning storms when they were harvesting paddy in two separate haors in Baniachong upazila on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Azim Uddin, 40, and Shahin Miah, 30.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, Baniachong police station OC Mozammel Haque said.

In Naogaon, farmer Md Nazmul was killed when lightning struck cropland at Mohanagar village in Manda upazila, where he was working on Wednesday at around 3pm.

Nazmul is the son of the village’s Md Saifuddin.

Anisur Rahman, OC of Manda polices station, confirmed the matter.  

In Tangail, Sakina Begum, 30, was severely wounded by a bolt of lightning when she was working in a field adjacent to her house.

The incident took place at Harbhanga village in Mirzapur upazila on Wednesday morning.

Sakina, wife of Helal Uddin of the village, died on her way to Kumudini Hospital in the upazila.

In Panchagarh, a 35-year old woman was killed by lightning at Chaklahat union in Sadar upazila.

The deceased was identified as Marzina Akhter, wife of Sattar Ali. Marzina was struck by the lightning bolt when she left her house out to bring in her daughter as it was raining heavily. She succumbed to her injuries on her way to a local hospital. Meanwhile in Rajshahi city, an elderly man died after being struck by lightning. He was identified as Mozaffar Hossain Musa, 60.
