A dawn-to-dusk hartal was observed by local Bangali groups Greater Parbatya Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Odhikar Forum in Khagrachhari.
The two groups observed the hartal protesting the death of a microbus driver in a gun attack in Rangamati’s Naniarchar upazila on May 4.
The hartal supporters brought out processions in the district.
Vehicular movement in the district was stopped due to the hartal, leading to public suffering. Most of the businesses are also closed.Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmad Khan said: “Police have been deployed at important points in the city.”
In Rangamati, the district lawyers’ association held a human chain protesting the murder of its senior member and upazila chairman Shaktimaan Chakma on Sunday noon in front of the Rangamati Judges Court.
Joint forces carried out drives in the district all day to nab those in the murders of Shaktimaan and five others including United People’s Democratic Front (Ganatantrik) leader Tapan Jyoti Chakma.
No case was filed till last evening in the murders of Shaktimaan Chakma on May 3 and five people including United People’s Democratic Front (Ganatantrik) chief Tapan Jyoti Chakma on Friday.
Transport workers of Khagrachhari will observe a 12-hour work abstention today in protest of microbus driver Md Sajib who was killed along with Tapan Jyoti. General Secretary Kamal Hossain announced the program on Sunday.
