A female college teacher and a male bank officer have been found dead in a flat of a two-storey building in Dakkhin Jhiltuli area of Faridpur district town.
Police recovered the bodies of Sajia Begum, 34, an assistant professor of Home Economics at Government Sarda Sundari Women’s College in Faridapur, and Faruk Hossain, 33, principal officer of Sonali Bank Ltd’s Motijheel branch in capital Dhaka, in the early hours of Monday.
Wife of Sheikh Shahidul Islam, a machinery parts trader and a resident of Dhaka's Sutrapur, Sajia had been living with their two sons in a flat on the ground floor of that building for the past one year.
However, Faruk, who hailed from Jashore’s Sharsha upazila, had rented another flat on that floor in April. He moved in only several days ago.
Police detained Sajia's husband Shahidul for interrogation over the incident.
Informed by building owner Nur Islam, a police team recovered both bodies from Faruk’s flat around 12:30am Monday, and sent them to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsies, said Faridpur Kotwali police station OC AFM Nasim.
Although Faruk was actually posted in Dhaka, he had rented the flat identifying himself as the principal officer of Sonali Bank’s Faridpur branch, said Nasim. "He (Faruk) might have been involved in an extramarital affair with the college teacher," the OC suspected.
The landlord's son David Hasan said he had found the door of Faruk’s flat open when he returned home around 11pm Sunday.
He said when he looked inside through the open door, he saw Faruk's body hanging from the ceiling fan and Sajia’s body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He then rushed to inform his father and the police.
Sajia, who hailed from Sutrapur’s Bania Nagar in Dhaka, lived in her flat with her sons while her husband lived in Dhaka. However, Shahidul arrived here along with his elder son on Thursday.
Shahidul said he communicated with his wife last around 4pm on Sunday. “She told me that she would come home soon from her duty at an HSC examination centre. But, she did not.”
He said he then informed Sajia’s colleagues about the matter and filed a general diary with Kotwali police.
Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police Jamal Pasha earlier had said: "It's not clear yet how both of them ended up dead in Faruk’s flat. We have launched an investigation to solve the mystery."
Later on Monday, however, police handed over the bodies to their respective families.
