The price of Hilsa fish has increased dramatically in Chandpur Bara Station fish arat, going up by Tk20,000 per maund.
Previously it cost Tk1200 to buy a Hilsa but now it costs Tk1700.
In retail markets, sellers are asking Tk2,000 per kilogram of Hilsa fish.
Sellers said that the price of Hilsa was lower two months back as a higher quantity was supplied.
Retail sellers of Chandpur biponibagh bazar are asking Tk2500 per kilogram of 1kg 200g size Hilsa. While a Hilsa of size 900g to 1kg costs between Tk1900 to Tk2000 and per kg of 400g costs Tk600.
Hilsa prices per kilogram of size 1kg of 200g range from Tk2000 - Tk2100, per maund being Tk80,000 - Tk84,000 in Chandpur Bara Station fish arat as of Thursday.
In March – April per maund cost Tk60,000 - Tk64,000, and per kilogram of 1kg 200g cost Tk1500 – Tk1600.
Per kilogram of 1kg size Hilsa costs Tk1750 – Tk1850, per maund being Tk70,000 –Tk75,000. Previously it cost Tk1200 per kg and Tk48,000 per maund.
Per kilogram of 700g size Hilsa costs Tk1300, per maund being Tk52,000, which previously cost Tk650 – Tk700 per kg and Tk26,000 – Tk28,000 per maund.
Per kilogram of 500g Hilsa previously cost Tk400 – Tk500, and per maund Tk16,000 – Tk20,000, while the price per kg has now soared to Tk900 and Tk35,000 per maund.
Per kilogram of 300g to 400g Hilsa cost Tk250 – Tk300, but now it is being sold at Tk550 – Tk600.
A seller at Chandpur Bara Station fish market said: “The supply of fish is lower than two months back. Plenty of Hilsa swam here from the South Seas a few months back. But the ones sold now are from Chandpur river,” he added.
President of Chandpur cab freedom fighter Jibon Kanai Chakrabarty said: “The prices have risen due to low supply, taxation, for higher demand in Ramdan, among other reasons.”
He added: “We are hoping the administration will take care of this. Bazar Monitoring Committee will meet at the offices of Chandpur district administration, where significant decisions may be taken regarding this.”
