Update : 23 May 2018, 05:13 PM

Six notorious gangs of robbers have surrendered arms to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Khulna.

Fifty-seven members of the gangs, who terrorized the Sundarbans, formally laid down arms at a function in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Wednesday.

The gangs – ‘Dada Bhai Bahini’, ‘Hannan Bahini’, ‘Amir Ali Bahini’, ‘Shurjo Bahini’, ‘Chhoto Shamsu Bahini’, and ‘Munna Bahini’ – surrendered 58 firearms and 1,284 rounds of bullets.

The first three gangs turned themselves in to RAB 6 and the others to RAB 8.

Sources said these gangs used to abduct fishermen for ransom. They used to extort from the people who depended on the Sundarbans for livelihoods.

A series of successful raids by RAB changed the situation. In the last two years, 217 robbers from 20 gangs have surrendered to RAB with firearms.
