On Tuesday, a three-member investigation committee, headed by DIG Anwar, was formed to look into Rony's death
Additional Deputy Inspector General (Dhaka range) Anwar Hossain has met with the family of Rezaul Islam alias Beshti Rony, victim of a recent “gunfight” between police and reported drug dealers.
Anwar went to Rony's house in Tongi’s Ershadnagar around 12pm on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, a three-member investigation committee, headed by DIG Anwar, was formed to look into Rony's death.
Rony's sister Shanta Aktar claimed: "After initially demanding Tk50,000 from us, police’s Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Achintya Kumar had demanded an additional sum of Tk150,000 for Rony’s release. He later asked to sent another Tk50,000 via bKash.”
"Later, Tongi police station Sub-Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique also demanded Tk100,000 more," said Shanta. "After I returned home to get half of the money, I heard my brother had been killed in crossfire."
Rony's mother Parvin Begum said: "The DIG came to our house at around noon. He wanted to know how the DB and Tongi police had extorted money from us."
She informed DIG Anwar that DB police had picked up Rony from the Bottola area of Ershadnagar around 2pm on Saturday.
Afterwards, Rony's parents went to the DB office Sunday afternoon. After extorting Tk250,000 in three instalments, she alleged, police made Parvin sign a blank piece of paper and let Rony go.
At that time, a police officer also took her written statement, she said.
Rony's father Hafizul Islam said: "The DIG also wanted to know of my son's addiction. I told him the truth, Rony used to take the drug yaba. I also heard that he used to sell yaba tablets."
Hafizul also said police, based on their informers Imran and Faisal’s statements, had arrested Rony in a drugs-related case seven years earlier and sent him to jail via court.
The probe team also spoke to the neighbours of the family on Wednesday.
Locals Nazmul Hossain and Rabeya Begum said they also heard rumours of Rony taking and dealing yaba.
