Road collisions kill over 40 people during Eid-ul-Fitr holidays

More than 40 people have been killed and scores injured in road accidents across the country in the past four days.

The accidents have taken place at a time when the transport sector experiences a rush on all modes of travel nationwide, centring on the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

However, prior to this, around 90 people died and scores were injured in road accidents across the country in the first two weeks of this month.

In 2017, at least 322 people were killed and 759 others injured in 272 accidents on roads, waterways and railways across the country in 13 days, between August 28 and September 9, before and after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passengers' welfare association.

It said 254 of them were killed in 214 road accidents.

The association also said that at least 311 more people were killed and 862 others injured in accidents in the 13 days before and after the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation last year.

The death tolls indicated that around 25 people were killed each day on average. In comparison, an average of 10 people were killed each day in the last four days.

Meanwhile, Eid travels were safer on waterways and railways this year, with no reports of any major accident or deaths.

On Monday, at least seven people were killed in separate road crashes in Magura, Naogaon, Feni, Jamalpur and Thakurgaon.

On Sunday, 21 people were killed in Nilphamari, Cox's Bazar, Noakhali, Comilla, Tangail, Thakurgaon and Jhenaidah.

On Friday and Saturday, the Eid day, at least 15 people died in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Sylhet, Chandpur, Habiganj, Jhenaidah and Gopalganj.

Most of these incidents also left a number of people with either minor or major injuries.

In 2016, 265 people were killed and 1,153 others injured in 208 accidents on roads, waterways and railways across the country in 12 days, including the Eid-ul-Azha holidays.
