Road accidents kill 37 across Bangladesh

At least 37 people were killed and 123 injured in separate road accidents across Bangladesh on Saturday.

The incidents took place in the districts of Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Savar, Gopalganj, Natore, Rangpur, Tangail, Lakshmipur and Faridpur.

Gaibandha: 18 dead, 38 injured

In Gaibandha, an accident claimed the lives of 18, leaving at least 38 injured on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in the Palashbari upazila. The death toll may rise as some survivors are critically injured.

An overnight bus lost control and crashed against a tree around 4:30am yesterday. Emergency services recovered the dead bodies and sent them to the Gobindaganj highway police station. Their identities could not be immediately ascertained.

The injured were dispatched to the nearby Palashbari Upazila Health Complex and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Many of them were unconscious.

According to Gobindaganj highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akhtaruzzaman, the bus was going to Thakurgaon from Dhaka. 

He said: “The driver lost control and the bus crashed. It was a complete wreck. While seven died on the spot nine others were declared dead on admission to the Palashbari Upazila Health Complex.”

Sirajganj: 2 dead, 10 injured

In Sirajganj, a bus and a truck collided on the Dhaka-Bogra Highway, killing the truck driver and the helper, and injuring 10.

The collision occurred yesterday in the Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj.

The deceased were identified as Shafiqul Islam and Rafiqul Islam. Their bodies were recovered by the police. The injured were admitted to various local medical facilities.

Police confiscated both vehicles but failed to detain the bus driver and helper.

Savar: 1 dead, 20 injured

In Savar, a collision between a bus and a truck left one dead and 20 injured.

Five of the survivors are in critical condition. The injured have been admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately. The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy. 

Savar model police station Sub-Inspector Enamul Huq said: “We do not know if anyone else died after being admitted to the hospital. A case will be filed in this regard.”

Gopalganj: 3 dead, 20 injured

In Gopalganj, a bus crushed a motorbike after losing control and then collided with a van and another bus. Two motorcycle passengers were killed, and 10 others injured in the accident.

The collision occurred at 7:40am in Ghonapara area in Gopalganj Sadar upazila yesterday.

The motorcycle was carrying three people affiliated with the Resource Integration Centre.

The deceased are office registrar Imran Hossain and field officer Pulok Bepari. The survivor, office manager Rubel Fakir who has been admitted to Gopalganj General hospital is in critical condition. They were returning to Gopalganj from Pirojpur after the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation. 

The nine other survivors were also admitted to the same hospital.

Gopalganj sadar police station Sub-Inspector Shawkat Hossain said: "A local bus bound for Gopalganj from Bagerhat lost control."

The bus also crashed with a nearby van and another local bus. Emergency services rescued the survivors. 

In another incident, a van driver called Lokman Sheikh, 50, was killed when a bus ran him over. 

Ten others were injured in the crash, and six of them were taken to Muksudpur upazila in critical condition. 

Muksudpur OC Mustafa Kamal Pasha said the Dhaka-bound Hamim Paribahan bus crushed a motorized cycle van, instantly killing its driver. It then lost control and fell into a ditch, injuring 10 of its occupants.

The situation was dealt with by police and the fire service.

Natore: 2 dead, 3 injured

In Natore, two were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a battery-driven auto-rickshaw.

The accident occurred at 6:30am yesterday. Sulta Rani and Kanai Chandra, both residents of Naldanga upazila, were killed in the collision in front of Komola Super Market in Natore town. 

The injured were admitted to Natore Sadar hospital. 

Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar police station, said although the truck was captured, the driver and helper managed to flee.

Rangpur: 6 dead, 10 injured

In Rangpur, six were killed and 10 injured when a truck ran over the passengers waiting for a double-decker bus in Paglapir.

According to Taraganj upazila police, a BRTC double-decker bound for Dhaka was changing its tyres near Soleasha area on the Rangpur-Dinajpur Highway. As the passengers were resting beside the highway, a truck ran them over. The truck was being steered by the helper because the driver was sleeping.

Six people were killed on the spot. Their identities could not be determined. The 10 injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College hospital.

Tangail: 1 dead 

In Tangail, the head-on collision between a bus and a motorcycle killed the driver of the latter, 30-year-old Abdul Based Mia. 

The incident occurred in Sakhipur upazila yesterday afternoon. 

Sakhipur police OC Tuhin Ali confirmed the matter, saying the deceased was on his way to a fishing trip when the head-on collision with the bus left him grievously injured. After locals took him to Tangail General Hospital, the attending physician pronounced him dead. 

Though police seized the bus, its driver managed to escape.

Lakshmipur: 2 dead, 1 injured

In Lakshmipur, a man and a woman were killed and another woman injured following a collision between a truck and CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Ramgati upazila in the early hours, reports UNB.

The accident took place on the Ramgati-Sonapur Road in the Sekherkillah area, said Ramgati police station OC ATM Arisul Haque.

Faridpur: 2 dead, 20 injured

Two people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in Bhanga upazila.

The incident took place in the upazila’s Purba Sadardi area around 9am, said Faridpur Fire Service Civil Defence’s Senior Station Officer Saifuzzaman.
