EC orders Gazipur SP to stop arrests during city polls

The High Court has also issued a rule asking the authorities not to make arbitrary arrest of BNP followers during the election

The Election Commission has ordered the police to refrain from arresting or harassing anyone without an arrest warrant until the end of Gazipur City Corporation election.

The order was conveyed to Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Harun-ur-Rashid via a letter signed by the commission's Joint Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan on Sunday.

The letter said recently a BNP delegation sent a written complaint against the Gazipur SP to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda. They requested the commission to stop the arrest and harassment of BNP leaders and activists.

At the same time, the delegation demanded equal rights and privileges for all party candidates. Based on their application, the commission ordered the Gazipur SP to stop all such activities.

At a press conference held Sunday, BNP's mayoral candidate for Gazipur city polls Hasan Uddin Sarker said police have been arresting and harassing his party leaders and agents without any warrants.

He expressed his fear regarding the election environment, saying: "I do not like the current situation surrounding the election."

Hasan displayed two news reports which showed the Awami League candidate riding in a police car while campaigning.

Meanwhile, on Monday afternoon, sheaf of paddy Chief Agent and Gazipur district BNP Senior Joint Secretary Sohrab Uddin sent two complaints against mass arrest to the returning officer.

High Court: No arbitrary arrest of BNP followers during Gazipur polls

The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why they should not be directed to follow the Appellate Division's guidelines and take effective measures to stop harassing the supporters and agents of the BNP mayoral candidate in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls.

The division bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir came up with the rule following a writ petition.

The secretary of Home Affairs Ministry, Election Commission, inspector general of police, Gazipur police commissioner, Gazipur superintendent of police and three others have been made respondents to the rule which is returnable in two weeks.

The court also verbally asked Attorney General Mahbubey Alam to make sure that the supporters and agents of BNP mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker are not arrested arbitrarily ahead of and during the voting.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed along with Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon stood for the petitioner while the Attorney General represented the state.

Earlier, in the day, Hasan Uddin Sarker filed the writ petition with the HC seeking its directives to stop harassing his supporters and agents violating the Appellate Division directives.
