The newly elected mayor says he has a master plan for the city

The newly elected mayor of Gazipur City Corporation, Advocate Jahangir Alam has reiterated his commitment to work for the betterment of the people and the city.

He was addressing his supporters at the returning officer’s office in the Bangataz auditorium on Wednesday. As Jahangir arrived, he was greeted by his supporters and activists.

Jahangir said: “I visited people door-to-door seeking their votes, but now I must visit the city dwellers for their support in making Gazipur a better city. I seek the support of almighty for granting me success in my endevours.

“I want to send my greetings and thanks to the people of Gazipur and especially those who supported me and the boat symbol (electoral symbol of the Awami League) from my neighbourhood.”

Adding that he has a master plan for the city, the newly elected mayor said: “I will work to free Gazipur from traffic jams and waterlogging. I want to turn Gazipur into a clean city.”

When asked about his stance on working with his opponents, Jahangir said: “I want to work with them (political opponents), and I will discuss my plans for the city with them.

“I hope that they will cooperate with me for the sake of the city and the future generation.”

Earlier in the day, after newly elected mayor visited him, Returning Officer Rakib Uddin stated: “As per section 2 of provision 37 of the law, we cannot yet declare Jahangir Alam the winner of this election, as voting is still postponed in nine polling centres.

“Further decision in this regard will be taken after discussing the matter with the Election Commission.”

However, the announcement caused uproar among those present there. So, the returning officer informally declared Jahangir Alam the winner of the election.

Later, Gazipur District Election Officer Md Tarifuzzaman explained the technical details of the issue to Jahangir’s supporters.

“The polling centres, where voting was postponed, had 23,959 votes in total. Jahangir will maintain his lead even if those votes are given to his opponents. So, he is the new mayor of Gazipur,” said Tarifuzzaman.

Following this announcement, Jahangir Alam accepted the polling result from the returning officer amid a round of applause from his supporters.
