Four suspected drug peddlers killed in 'gunfights' across Bangladesh

A large amount of illegal drugs, weapons and ammunition have been seized from the scenes where the ‘gunfights’ took place

Four suspected drug peddlers have been killed in so called gunfights across four districts of Bangladesh. 

In Chapainawabganj, suspected drug dealer Khairul Islam, 45, has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) forces.

The incident occurred in Mollan Village under Sundarpur Union of Sadar Upazila. 

Chapainawabganj RAB 5 Camp Commander Squadron Leader Syed Abdullah Al Murad confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, saying: “A RAB team was patrolling the Sundarpur area as part of the ongoing anti-drug campaign.

“On a tip off that a gang of drug dealers was engaging in illegal narcotics trade in a nearby mango orchard, RAB conducted a raid there. Sensing RAB presence, the culprits began firing on them, triggering a gunfight.”

He continued: “RAB later found a body riddled by bullets. The suspect was taken to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival. Four RAB members were also injured during the gunfight.”

One foreign gun, one magazine, four bullets, and 117 bottles of Phensedyl were seized from the spot, said RAB sources.

In Kushtia, a suspected drug peddler named Shamsuddin alias Shyam, 36, was killed in a so called gunfight with the police in Bheramara Upazila.

The incident occurred in Bakapul area of the upazila. Shyam was a native of Biswaspara Village.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Bheramara police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam said: “Police received a tip off that a gang of illegal narcotics dealers were trading drugs in the early hours of Saturday.

“A police team took up positions in the area to apprehend the suspects, but they began firing on the law enforcers. Police retaliated, and one culprit got injured in the ensuing gunfight.”

He continued: “Police later took the suspect to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead on arrival. Later investigation revealed that the deceased man is Shyam, who was accused in around eight narcotics related cases.”

Police seized one locally made gun, two bullets, and 500 pieces of yaba tablets from the scene. The body has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident.

In Dinajpur, a suspected illegal narcotics trader was killed in a gunfight between two rival gangs in Parbatipur Upazila. The deceased, Abdur Rahim, was accused in several cases and hailed from Puraton Bazar Railgate area.

Police found his body in the Belaichandi area of the upazila.

Parbatipur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibul Haque Prodhan confirmed the matter to the correspondent, saying: “On a tip off that a gunfight has taken place in Parbatipur, police investigated the area and found the body of Abdur Rahim, who was a listed drug peddler.

“Rahim died in a gunfight between two rival gangs. His body has been sent to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital for autopsy.”

Police seized one locally made gun, one bullet, one bullet casing, 100 pieces of yaba, and 50 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.

In Cox’s Bazar, a suspected narcotics dealer named Mohammad Ismile, 30, was killed in a gunfight between two rival gangs in Chakria Upazila. 

The incident occurred near the Chakria-Lama road. 

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Chakria police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Bakhtiar Uddin Chowdhury said: “We received a tip that two rival gangs of drug peddlers had engaged in a gunfight for establishing dominance in the area.

“We dispatched a police team in the area, but the culprits were able to get away. After a search, police found the body of Ismile from the spot.”

He added: “Later investigation revealed that Ismile was a listed drug deader and he was accused in six narcotics related cases. His body will be sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.”

Police seized a gun, two cartridges, and 465 pieces of yaba tablets from the scene.
